Safe Sleep Certification assures that the award-winning institution has a fully developed infant safe sleep program, thoroughly trained staff and implements the safe sleep guidelines outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).

JUPITER, Fla. (Oct. 20, 2021) – Top destination in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast for world-class healthcare, Jupiter Medical Center has been certified by the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program for the award-winning institution’s commitment to best practices and education on infant safe sleep.

“We are honored that the National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program recognizes our commitment to the safety of our infant patients and newborns,” says Dr. Amit Rastogi, president and CEO of Jupiter Medical Center.

Jupiter Medical Center’s Safe Sleep Initiative began in December 2018, when the Level II De George Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) opened. The ongoing project follows best practice guidelines outlined by the American Academy of Pediatrics and includes thorough protocols also practiced in the Florence A. De George Children’s & Women’s Services Obstetrics Unit.

The program includes ongoing education for mothers and families of newborns and infants up to 1 year of age. Participants are provided with printed materials, a DVD, real-time conversations, modeled behavior by staff for mothers and families to emulate, and sleep crib cards and safe sleep sacks for NICU babies as they begin transitioning to go home. Jupiter Medical Center’s Safe Sleep Program also provides ongoing training to staff, collects data, conducts safe sleep crib audits, and is overseen by the institution’s Safe Sleep Committee.

The National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program was created by Cribs for Kids®, the only national infant safe sleep organization. Based in Pittsburgh, Penn., Cribs for Kids® is dedicated to preventing infant sleep-related deaths due to accidental suffocation.

“Sleep-Related Death (SRD) results in the loss of more than 3,500 infants every year in the U.S.,” says Dr. Michael Goodstein, neonatologist and medical director of research at Cribs for Kids®. “We know that modeling safe infant sleep in the hospital and providing education to families has a significant effect on infant mortality.”

With more than 1,900 babies born at Jupiter Medical Center each year, a premium is placed on the experience of the physicians and world-class care at the hospital’s state-of-the-art Florence A. De George Children’s & Women’s Services Obstetrics Unit and the Level II De George NICU. In addition to the renowned care and technologically advanced monitoring and diagnostics at both facilities, the luxurious accommodations and compassionate support services before, during and after delivery at the Children’s & Women’s Services Obstetrics Unit are well known to expectant families throughout Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

As a testament to this exceptional maternity care, readers of the Palm Beach Post voted Jupiter Medical Center the Best Place to Have a Baby in Palm Beach County in the daily newspaper’s 2021 Annual Best of Palm Beach County Community Choice Awards.

The National Safe Sleep Hospital Certification Program was created in partnership with leading infant health and safety organizations including All Baby & Child; the National Center for the Review & Prevention of Child Deaths; Association of SIDS and Infant Mortality Programs; Kids in Danger; Children’s Safety Network; American SIDS Institute; Charlie’s Kids; CJ Foundation for SIDS; and numerous state American Academy of Pediatric chapters and health departments.
